Biography
Originally from Doylestown, Pennsylvania, Staff Sergeant Nicholas Owsik began learning the steps to lead trumpet under Ken Brader. He then attended the University of North Texas on scholarship, earning both his Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Jazz Studies there. During his time at UNT, he had the opportunity to study with renowned performer-teachers such as John Holt, Paul Stephens, Mike Steinel, Rodney Booth, Allen Vizzutti, and Jay Saunders. He was a member of the prestigious One O’Clock Lab Band for four years, playing lead trumpet in the band from 2017 to 2019. While performing in the One O’Clock Lab Band, Staff Sgt. Owsik shared the stage with such greats as Doc Severinsen, Jimmy Heath, and John Fedchock. He can be heard on the One O’Clock studio recordings of Lab 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Member of the Jazz Ambassadors
The Jazz Ambassadors, the U.S. Army’s premier big band, was formed in 1969 and is celebrated both nationally and internationally for performing America’s original art form—jazz. Known as “America’s Big Band,” this 19-member ensemble showcases versatile programming, including classic big band standards, solos, patriotic tunes, contemporary jazz, and original compositions by its members. Many of these works are available through their jazz education initiative, Perspectives.
The Jazz Ambassadors have performed across all 50 states and in Canada, Mexico, Europe, Japan, and India, joining prestigious orchestras like the Boston Pops and National Symphony and appearing at major jazz festivals in Montreux, Newport, and Toronto. Their performances reflect a rich legacy, met with acclaim for celebrating jazz’s unique spirit worldwide.
