ROYALTY FREE BIG BAND CHARTS

EASY (grade level 1–2)

Beginner compositions for middle school bands or young high school bands. Moderate brass ranges with a trumpet maximum to a written G above the staff and trombone maximum to a written D above the staff. Solo parts contain written solos as well as chord symbols. All rhythm section parts include chord symbols, voicing’s and demonstrate the desired rhythmic feels and appropriate ensemble figures.

Medium Swing Blues for beginning band. Easy brass ranges with lead trumpet maximum to a written A above the staff and trombone maximum to a written E above the staff. Guitar part includes tab as well as chord symbols. Piano and Bass parts include chord symbols and written out voicings/bass lines. Solo sheet with written out solos and chords transposed for every instrument.

Medium ballad for younger bands, featuring the saxophone section and short written solos for piano. Easy brass ranges, with Trumpet 1 up to a printed G above the staff and Trombone 1 up to a printed F above the staff.  All rhythm section parts include chord symbols, and Piano and Bass parts also include printed voicings/bass lines.

Not All But Most – MSG Paul White

Medium Swing medium swing in the style of the Count Basie Band. The top trumpet note is a G on top of the staff, and solo changes are written in the Alto 1, Trumpet 2, and Trombone 2 parts. The melody is stated followed by a solo section over the form, and finally, a shout section sends the chart out, including a short tag. This is an excellent chart to help develop basic swing feel throughout the band, and for beginning the discussion of rhythm section roles, specifically the Freddie Green style of guitar comping in the big band.

MODERATE (grade level 3–4)

Mainstream compositions appropriate for the average to advanced high school ensemble or young college ensemble. Brass ranges move above the treble clef staff to written C-D for the lead trumpet and down to pedal Bb for the bass trombone. More sophisticated musical language. Chord symbols provided for improvised sections. Rhythm section parts contain some written melodic lines but contain mostly chord symbols and have the necessary rhythmic patterns and ensemble figures.

It Wasn't You – MSG Paul White

3/4 Jazz Waltz - contrafact for Intermediate Band featuring the lead Alto Saxophone with chord changes for improvisation inspired by the jazz standard My Romance. Medium brass ranges with Trumpet 1 up to written A and Trombone 1 up to a written G above the staff. Special emphasis on syncopation and dividing the 3/4 measure into 2 dotted quarter notes. Brief Saxophone Soli followed by a full ensemble Shout Chorus.

Annapolis Sail – SFC Daniel Jamieson

Medium Swing - Inspired by the beautiful waters of Annapolis, this medium swing contrafact on Autumn Leaves offers solo opportunities for flugelhorn (or trumpet), tenor sax, and trombone. This arrangment has a few complex triplet rhythms. Focusing on the subtle dynamics will help bring this piece to life!

A New Standard – MSG Vince Norman

Medium tempo bossa nova with solos in alto saxophone and trombone. Solo parts include chord changes for improvised solos, as well as printed suggested solos. Trumpets double on flugelhorn (optional); piano and bass include both written parts and chord changes. Highest trumpet note is printed Ab.

Celestial Swingin' Blues – MSG (ret) Vince Norman

Medium swing/shuffle blues in Bb based on the first four bars of the verse to “Swinging on a Star.” Sax soli between solos in trumpet 2 and tenor sax 1. Top lead trumpet note is A above the staff (section unison).

Chris – SGM (ret) Gene Thorne

This floating 3/4 straight eighth ballad is a tenor feature. Blend and balance is very important throughout, particularly for the instruments playing in bars 51 through 57. Top trumpet note is D above high C.

Infernal Jamnation – SGM (ret) Jeffrey Lopez

Jazz Shuffle with a 12/8 feel B section. Baritone sax solo and piano solo, no woodwind doubles. Top trumpet note is high C.

Lili's Song – MSG Paul White

Progressive medium swing/groove composition featuring Tenor Sax 1 and Piano. Trumpet section doubles on Flugel Horn. Melodic duet played between Tenor Sax 1 and Flugel Horn 2. Brief ensemble shout with independence of sections. Top trumpet note is Bb.

Mr. Timmons – SGM (Ret) Gene Thorne

A medium swing chart written in the style of pianist Bobby Timmons. Improvised solo for tenor saxophone (suggested solo included). Moderate brass ranges with a high note of concert F above the staff for both trombone and trumpet. Guitar, piano, and bass include both written parts and chord changes.

Prime Sus-pect – SGM (Ret) Darryl Brenzel

A medium tempo swing tune with a bluesy/mysterioso vibe akin to “Killer Joe.” Sax solo for either alto 1 or tenor 1 and for trumpet (optional guitar). Top trumpet note is G on top of the staff.

Together Houses – MSG (Ret) Vince Norman

Medium ballad featuring alto sax. Moderate brass ranges, with Trumpet 1 up to a printed G (optional B) above the staff and Trombone 1 up to F above the staff. Piano and Bass parts include both chord symbols and printed voicings/bass lines. Guitar part consists of chord symbols only. Alto Sax solo part includes chord symbols only, but solo pages include both a transcribed solo and an easier solo.

College ensembles or advanced high school groups. Extended ranges for the all brass, woodwind doubles for the saxophones including soprano saxophone, flutes, clarinets, and bass clarinets. Dynamics and ensemble balance play critical role. Extended improvisation sections featuring individual soloists.

A straight-ahead jazz chart featuring drums and tenor sax. No woodwind doubles. Top trumpet note is F# above high C.

Resolution – MSG Paul White

Pensive ballad featuring tenor sax 1 based on the harmonic content of Thad Jones’ “Kids Are Pretty People.” Saxes double on flute, clarinet, and bass clarinet. Trumpet section doubles on flugelhorn. Double-time section towards the end of tenor solo leads to the climax of the work. Extreme range in trumpet 1 and rhythmically challenging parts in trombone section.

Träumerei – MSG Paul White

Jazz ballad arrangement of the famous piano work by Robert Schumann featuring solo piano. Brief improvised tenor sax solo over written melodic line. Extended piano cadenza. Trumpets double on flugelhorn; baritone saxophone doubles on bass clarinet. Delicate “chorale” sections in combination with subtle background figures. Highest flugelhorn note is printed B; lowest bass trombone note is C.

Rosa Mae – SFC (Ret) Paul Armstrong

While Mary Lou’s original recording leaned more towards rock ’n’ roll, SFC Paul Armstrong’s arrangement has more of a New Orleans flavor. Note how the bass line, guitar rhythms, and piano lines all combine to form one dense sound.
