Biography
Sergeant Major James Wood is a native of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and East Lansing, Michigan. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of North Texas, a Master of Music degree from Northwestern University, and a Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music. Sgt. Maj. Wood joined the unit in 2001, where he served as a trumpet player in the Concert Band for 14 years prior to joining the Support Element. He and his wife, Holly, an alumnus of the Army Field Band, have three children.

Their expertise allows the musicians of the Army Field Band to focus on their craft and Army training, knowing that all behind-the-scenes operations—from arranging music to ensuring instruments are in top condition and managing the day-to-day supply and transportation needs—are expertly taken care of. The Army Field Band Support Group is integral to the overall mission, providing the foundation for excellence in performance and readiness.
