Greetings from Fort Meade! I hope this message finds you all well.
As we look ahead to a very busy summer - especially as our nation prepares to commemorate America’s 250th birthday - I’d like to reflect on a highly successful spring. The Band, Chorus, and Jazz Ambassadors completed an exceptional West Coast tour, performing from Seattle to San Diego and from Boise to Grand Junction, CO. Our outreach efforts included multiple student engagements and assemblies, as well as a radio broadcast on AZ PBS.
Since returning from tour, the team has been in full production mode for our annual “Salute to Service” television program. Our host this year is Super Bowl Champion and former Eagles star Jason Kelce, who spent a morning with the Old Guard to learn about their mission and an afternoon recording with the Jazz Ambassadors (turns out he’s a pretty good bari sax player). Next week, we’ll continue filming with Jason and former Army Ranger and NFL player Alejandro Villanueva at West Point as we highlight Alejandro’s unique service story as a GWOT veteran.
We were also thrilled to work with the incomparable Jon Batiste last week, during which he recorded four selections - two of them featuring members of the Field Band. In the coming weeks, the Six-String Soldiers will travel to Nashville to film with country artist Ernest. We will share broadcast details as soon as they are finalized. During this same period, the Band provided music for A&E’s production of “HistoryTalks,” featuring interviews with the four living former Presidents.
Summer will bring a robust lineup of America 250 performances: the Band and Chorus at Gettysburg National Park and Independence National Historical Park with guest artist Queen Latifah; the Jazz Ambassadors as the featured Independence Day performers at Disneyland; and the Six-String Soldiers performing with the Cincinnati Pops. Additionally, members of the Band will appear at the Washington Tattoo and return to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
As mentioned previously, the Field Band’s 80th Anniversary Concert will take place on 27 September at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas. Each performing element will be featured, and the evening will also include the change of command between me and LTC Randy Bartel, who currently serves as Deputy Commander. We plan to invite alumni to join us for the patriotic finale (Armed Forces Salute, Battle Hymn, and Stars and Stripes), and we will refine those details once we know who is interested. We also intend to host a post-concert reception at the hall for alumni and the Band. Please pass on to those in your circles that the deadline for alumni to let us know if they’re attending is 1 July. This is especially to see who is interesting in sitting in with the Band and for catering. Formal invitations from the Commanding General will be sent later this summer. In the meantime, additional information is available on our alumni page:
